What is TPO and Why Did the EU Ban It?
TPO (trimethylolpropane triacrylate oxide) is a photoinitiator used in gel nail polishes to cure nails under UV or LED lamps. Recent studies have classified it as potentially toxic to reproduction, which led to its ban in the European Union in September 2025 (thetimes.co.uk).

Safe Alternatives to TPO in Polishes and Gels
Brands and salons are now adopting safe and effective alternatives:
- TPO-L: A less toxic variant that maintains curing efficiency.
- Irgacure and other approved photoinitiators: Ensure long-lasting, safe results.
- Hybrid and eco-friendly formulas: Free from problematic photoinitiators, gentle on the skin and environment.
Benefits for Salons and Clients
- Salons comply with regulations without compromising quality.
- Clients enjoy strong, healthy nails.
- Greater ingredient transparency builds consumer trust.
Future Regulations in Cosmetics
In addition to the TPO ban, the EU is introducing other key cosmetic regulations:
Ban on Microplastics
Regulation (EU) 2023/2055 prohibits the intentional addition of microplastics in cosmetic products to protect the environment and oceans (single-market-economy.ec.europa.eu).
